Chronic Kidney Disease – Symptoms & Causes

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), estimates more than 1 in 7 patients have Chronic Kidney Disease. These alarming numbers prompted the publication of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) National Facts in March 2021. Statistically speaking, as many as 9 out of 10 adults with CKD do not know they are being impacted. As Chronic Kidney Disease worsens, so do the statistics. Statistics show 2 in every 5 adults with severe CKD do not know they have CKD.

Chronic Kidney Disease – Symptoms and Causes

What Causes Chronic Kidney Disease?

Diabetes and High Blood Pressure are the most common causes of CKD. Other conditions such as heart disease, obesity, and a family history of CKD can also be warning signs of CKD. However, the condition is more common in patients over 65 years of age. According to CDC, those older than 65 years of age represent 38 percent of all cases. CKD seems to be higher in women than men and the percentage also increases in non-Hispanic Black adults.

Nearly 786, 000 people in the United States are living with advanced stages of chronic kidney disease, known as End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). ESRD requires dialysis or a kidney transplant. In 2018 there were over 131,000 people who began treatment for ESRD. This shows the progression of CKD to ESRD. As we look at these numbers it becomes important to understand ways to prevent the decline in kidney function from growing at these rates.

How Can Risk be Lowered for Patients?

Lowering the risk of CKD means understanding current medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and family history. It also means understanding how current habits can impact your future health. Understanding things that may increase your risk of CKD is crucial. This can include medications to avoid and foods you may need to limit. It is also important to understand the impact of certain herbal supplements. Primarily, however, it also involves detection! This allows doctors to discuss preventive measures with patients.
