Renal Replacement Therapy

Renal Replacement Therapy

Renal Replacement Therapy or RRT, as some may say, comes in many forms. Inclusive of in-center dialysis, peritoneal dialysis, home hemodialysis, and transplantation, the term refers to establishing an alternative therapy after a decrease in renal function. Each modality or therapy affords patients the opportunity to enjoy more of their life, experience another New Year, and anticipate more adventures.

On December 22, 2020, the US Senate passed the Comprehensive Immunosuppressive Drug Coverage for Kidney Transplant Patient Act, which will extend the coverage of immunosuppressive medication after the 36-month Medicare coverage period. This means of those estimated 375 adult kidney transplant recipients who lose their transplant each year due to lack of coverage, according to the American Society of Nephrology, will have access to continued therapy at an affordable cost.
As we begin 2021 with the new ESRD Treatment Choices Model throughout 30% of the Hospital Referral Regions, this is great news that may advance discussions around transplantation. The transplant itself is not a cure, it too is replacement therapy. Understanding exceptions to inclusion within ETC Models and required documentation will be key factors for clinics who have been mandated to participate.

Visonex is poised to offer solutions to these dilemmas as well as others. We prepare to enter into 2021, understanding the impact of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Renal Replacement Therapy and the impact each will have, not only on the patient lifespan, but also the quality of life they will be able to experience. Is there existing data within an organization that may assist in the identification of CKD so that patients are afforded the opportunity to explore all options of Renal Replacement Therapy prior to the condition impacting their decision? There are many ways to review this information across databases and within specific organizations, and Visonex can help!
